RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2023

This winter has seen masses of birds at the feeders but not this weekend. The last bout of freezing weather with deep snow on the ground having gone a week ago the weather has turned warm and wet. Today it was 9C outside.

We saw the same eight species as in the last two years, all birds we see every day, just in slightly slower numbers. During the cold weather there have been many blackbirds, sometimes ten at a time, but there were none today.

Thirty individual birds appeared, compared to forty-one in 2022 and forty-seven in 2021. Chaffinches topped the list with twelve. Only five coal tits were seen at a time but I think there were far more as they were darting out from shelter only briefly. There could have been dozens hidden in the trees.

Here's the full list:

Chaffinch      12
Coal tit           5
Blue tit           3
Great tit         3
Greenfinch     3
Dunnock        2
Robin            1
Great Spotted Woodpecker    1
