The Great Outdoors Spring issue

The latest issue of The Great Outdoors is in the shops now. In it I look at fifteen pairs of footwear new out this year and complain about the lack of ones with a wide fit. I also review the Soto Thermostack Cook Set.

This issue has a wide range of different features and some stunning photography. A splendid picture of Arkle in the NW Highlands by James Roddie opens the issue. A little further south in the same area Alex Nail camps on Beinn Dearg in Torridon, a feature illustrated with his superb photography. Neither Arkle or Beinn Dearg are Munros. Currently 282 hills are and how the list has changed since Munro compiled it is told in a fascinating article by Alan Rowan.

Away from the Highlands Ben Lerwill walks round the Ladybower and Derwent Reservoirs in the Peak District and looks at their significance while five outdoor writers choose their favourite local hills in areas ranging from Dartmoor to the Lake District.

 

In shorter pieces Jim Perrin looks at Drygarn Fawr in the Cambrian Mountains for his Mountain Portrait, TGO Challenge Coordinators Sue Oxley and Ali Ogden discuss the mental health benefits of a multi-day trip, and Chiara Bullen interviews Gabriel Stewart about his 1,000 mile walk round Britain and his book I Went For A Walk.  Noel Dawson reviews Tony Howard's Quest Into The Unknown, which I'm looking forward to reading, and Roger Smith reviews The Salt Path by Raynor Winn. Roger Smith also looks at the arguments for and against more signposts in the mountains.
