The August issue of The Great Outdoors is in the shops now. I've written about a recent two-night trip in a quiet corner of the Cairngorms in my Backpacking Column and reviewed ten alternatives to standard double-skin tents plus the new Montane Air Jacket. Also in the gear pages Will Renwick reviews ten pairs of socks.
The issue openings with a pair of stunning pictures - Beinn Alligin and Beinn Dearg in Torridon by David Lintern and the Boxing Glove Stones and Black Ashop Moor in the Peak District by Alan Novelli. The great pictures continue through the magazine illustrating Dan Aspel's tour of Wainwright's favourite Lakeland peaks; Helen Iles' night out on Cadair Idris; David Lintern's walk of the Tranter Round of Glen Nevis; Ed Byrne exploring the Howgills; and Leon McCarron walking 1000 miles through the Middle East. In his Mountain Magic column Carey Davies reminisces about a walk to the Bokor Hill Station in Cambodia. Roger Smith looks at the implications of the Brexit vote for the countryside in his Environment column. In the Hillwalkers' Library Jim Perrin reviews an old favourite of mine, though I haven't read it in many years - Jack Kerouac's The Dharma Bums. I'll have to dig out my old copy.
