Sigma DP1 on Backpacking Light

My review of the Sigma DP1 camera has just appeared on Backpacking Light.com. I’ve been using this camera since last summer and am very pleased with the images it produces though not so happy with aspects of it in use. It’s of interest to lightweight backpackers because it’s the only digital compact camera with a sensor large enough to produce images comparable to those from a much heavier and larger DSLR. Although other digital compacts are better designed and easier to use the images just don’t compare with the DP1. As well as the images in the review Backpacking Light has published two photo essays with images taken with the DP1 – see my posts for January 8 & 21. There are more DP1 photo essays to come.

  1. I demo'd this camera at a trade exhibition in Las Vegas exactly a year ago and was less than impressed with it. It was especially disappointing as the eagerly awaited DP1 release had been delayed for months. The launch was awaited by many with much anticipation, but the camera has been seen as something of a let down due mainly to the absurdly slow buffer speed. I'll be interested to read your review of it, Chris.

My opinion of the DP1 is that it is capable of producing good quality images, but is very irritating in use.

    I didn't buy it.

  2. My opinion is much the same as yours LotC. For landscapes it's superb as long as you are patient. The buffer speed is faster than the Ricoh GR-D! But the ergonomics are much inferior to the GR-D. However if you want a lightweight camera that can take images of equivalent quality to an APS-C sensor DSLR it's the only choice.
